Kehlsteinhaus fire and arson investigation

The historic Kehlsteinhaus, also known as the ‘Eagle’s Nest’, was almost completely destroyed by a fire at the Obersalzberg near Berchtesgaden on the evening of October 23, 2026. German police have detained a 33-year-old man from Berlin on suspicion of arson. The suspect, who was reportedly traveling on a motorcycle near the scene, has been placed in a closed psychiatric facility. Investigators are examining his statements and potential motives, noting that the man had previously confessed to a different crime that may have reached its statute of limitations.

Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann and Culture Minister Markus Blume have announced intentions to rebuild the structure. An expert commission consisting of specialists in monument preservation, construction, and remembrance culture will be formed to develop a reconstruction concept. The objective is to preserve the site as a ‘historical witness’ and a place of education for future generations while addressing its complex associations with the National Socialist regime.
