Keiko Fujimori confronts entrenched polarization ahead of Peru's new term

Political analysts warn that Peru’s deepening polarization will hinder Keiko Fujimori’s ability to govern. They trace the divide to long‑standing structural issues such as historic exclusion, inequality and the legacy of authoritarian‑neoliberal Fujimorism dating back to the 1990s. Critics argue that these forces are more entrenched than any individual leader’s agenda and that the current political climate is unlikely to improve without addressing the underlying socioeconomic disparities.

Opposition commentators also note that the left’s strategy of denying Fujimori’s recent electoral gains—by pushing the dispute to the Inter‑American Court of Human Rights—may prolong political stalemate. They stress that any viable opposition must move beyond personal attacks and propose concrete policies on water access, gas expansion, security and economic growth, issues that have been largely ignored during the campaign.
