Keiko Fujimori set to clinch Peru presidential runoff as vote count finalizes

Peru’s presidential runoff is virtually decided. With 99.88% of ballot boxes tallied, Keiko Fujimori of Fuerza Popular holds 50.12% of the vote against 49.88% for left‑wing candidate Roberto Sánchez, a margin of roughly 44,500 votes. The National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) said the final result will be proclaimed on 3 July, with credential delivery on 15 July and inauguration slated for 28 July.

Sánchez has rejected the outcome, alleging fraud in the overseas vote and filing appeals before the National Jury of Elections, but legal analysts argue the challenge lacks merit given the near‑complete count and the JNE’s prior dismissal of most of his resources. Fellow congressman Arturo Alegría and other leaders have questioned Sánchez’s credibility and warned of possible unrest if the result is not accepted.

The incoming administration faces a volatile security landscape, including a surge in organized‑crime extortion and a historically unstable political environment that has seen eight presidents in as many years.
