Keiko Fujimori Wins Peru Presidential Election

Peru’s National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) completed the 100 % count of the runoff held on 7 June 2026. Keiko Fujimori of Fuerza Popular received 9,223,396 votes (50.135 %) and defeated left‑wing candidate Roberto Sánchez, who obtained 9,173,755 votes (49.865 %). The final margin was 49,641 votes, one of the narrowest in recent Peruvian history. Fujimori, 51, will become the first woman elected president of Peru for the 2026‑2031 term.

The National Jury of Elections (JNE) is set to proclaim the results on 3 July, with credentialing on 15 July and inauguration on 28 July. In statements she emphasized national unity, saying “the doors of dialogue are open” and pledged to “recover order” and take preventive measures against the upcoming El Niño phenomenon. Security, crime reduction and economic revitalisation were highlighted as priority areas.

The United States Department of State issued a congratulatory message, promising close cooperation on security, trade and development, while regional bodies such as the OAS and the Andean Community also sent felicitations. Opposition leader Sánchez has refused to recognise the results, alleging – without evidence – irregularities in overseas voting. International observers have reported no fraud.

Fujimori’s victory marks a shift toward conservatism in Latin America and places a highly polarised nation at a crossroads between restoring stability and navigating the legacy of the Fujimori name.
