Keiko Fujimori was inaugurated as President of Peru on 28 July 2026 for a 2026‑2031 term, becoming the first woman elected by popular vote. She defeated left‑wing candidate Roberto Sánchez in a runoff by fewer than 50 000 votes. In her inaugural address she promised “method, discipline, work and a clear road map” and announced a hard‑line security agenda: during states of emergency the Armed Forces will temporarily lead security operations and internal order, targeting organized crime, drug trafficking and illegal mining, and she pledged to strengthen intelligence agencies.

Fujimori formed a 19‑minister cabinet headed by Vice President Luis Galarreta. The ceremony was attended by ten heads of state and government, including Argentine President Javier Milei, Spain’s King Felipe VI, and leaders from Paraguay, Ecuador, Panama, Bolivia, Uruguay, Chile, Honduras and Aruba, as well as representatives of China, the United States, Japan and South Korea.

Separately, Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum announced talks with Fujimori to restore diplomatic relations that were broken after Peru granted asylum to Betssy Chávez. Social organisations and families of victims staged protests in Lima, denouncing the return of Fujimorismo and alleging human‑rights violations.
