Keiko Fujimori Leads Peru Presidential Election

Conservative candidate Keiko Fujimori is ahead in Peru's presidential runoff, holding about 50.11% of the vote and a margin of roughly 43,000 votes over left‑wing rival Roberto Sánchez. The national electoral authority (ONPE) has not yet declared an official winner, with around 36,000–40,000 ballots still to be counted and the final proclamation expected in mid‑July.

Fujimori described the result as “irreversible,” while Sánchez has alleged irregularities, requested the annulment of thousands of overseas votes that favored Fujimori, and said he will not recognize the outcome. The electoral commission rejected his request. Analysts see Fujimori’s lead as part of a broader rightward shift in Latin America, and the pending certification could trigger political tension if the count is contested.
