Keiko Fujimori meets UN Secretary-General to discuss crime and El Niño

Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in New York during the 81st UN General Assembly. During the meeting, Fujimori emphasized the priority of combating transnational organized crime, including extortion, drug trafficking, illegal mining, and human trafficking, calling for increased international cooperation and information exchange.

Fujimori also expressed gratitude for the anticipatory response and prevention efforts being led by nine UN agencies regarding the upcoming El Niño phenomenon for 2026-2027, particularly for the regions of Tumbes, Piura, and Lambayeque.

In response to the imminent threat of El Niño, regional authorities in La Libertad are coordinating with the National Center for Disaster Risk Management (Cenepred). Acting regional governor Ever Cadenillas announced a plan for 108 interventions to mitigate risks in critical areas. This includes 61 interventions managed by the central government and 47 managed by the La Libertad regional government, focusing on rivers and ravines to prevent damage from expected rainfall.
