Peru: President Fujimori announces security and pension reforms

President Keiko Fujimori has announced several policy initiatives and economic updates in Peru. Regarding social welfare, the administration plans to double the number of Yuyaq centers for pensioners from 12 to 24 locations. However, the government has postponed the promised doubling of the Pensión 65 subsidy until 2027, citing difficult inherited fiscal conditions. The Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion (Midis) has also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting vulnerable elderly citizens through programs like Pensión 65.

In terms of security, Fujimori pledged increased resources to strengthen the equipment and tactical capabilities of the National Police of Peru (PNP) to combat crime. This comes amid reports from the National Institute of Legal Medicine (Sinadef) showing 134 homicides in the first 26 days of her administration, with 76.1% involving firearms.

On the economic front, Credicorp Capital reported growing investor confidence due to the government's creation of presidential commissions to reform financial markets. Additionally, Fujimori's recent asset declaration to the Comptroller General revealed a personal patrimony of over S/ 1.1 million, including a claim for unpaid vacation from her political party, Fuerza Popular.
