Mexico and Peru move to restore diplomatic ties after election

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said her government intends to re‑establish diplomatic relations with Peru following the election of President‑elect Keiko Fujimori. She announced that she has asked Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco to open contact with the incoming Peruvian team to “see the particularities of how to recover that relationship,” adding, “Sí tenemos intención de recuperar la relación con Perú. Nosotros no rompimos esa relación. La rompieron ellos.”

Fujimori responded that her administration will pursue the same goal, stating, “De mi lado habrá toda la intención para poder retomar las relaciones entre Perú y México.” The diplomatic break, which began in November 2025, stemmed from Mexico’s criticism of the arbitrary detention of former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo and Mexico’s grant of political asylum to former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chávez. Both countries have kept their embassies closed while remaining members of regional bodies such as the Pacific Alliance. The next step will be formal talks to lift the suspension and resume normal bilateral engagement on trade, security and consular matters.
