Keiko Fujimori receives credentials, vows reconciliation and reforms as Peru's president‑elect
Keiko Fujimori was formally handed her presidential credentials by the National Jury of Elections (JNE) at the Gran Teatro Nacional in Lima, marking the start of her term as Peru's president‑elect for 2026‑2031. In her inaugural speech she pledged to put the State at the service of the population, end the inequality that “suffocates” the country, and pursue a policy of national reconciliation while acknowledging the need to address the deep political divide. Fujimori also outlined immediate priorities: combating the surge in organized crime, tackling the security crisis marked by rising sicariato and extortion, and preparing for the climatic challenges posed by the El Niño phenomenon. In foreign policy, she announced support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and the UN‑backed autonomy plan for Western Sahara following a meeting with the Moroccan ambassador. Additionally, she met with the Peruvian Episcopal Conference to coordinate the planned papal visit of Pope León XIV in November. The new administration will need to negotiate a governing coalition in a Congress where it lacks a majority.
