Keiko Fujimori requests legislative powers for Peruvian reforms

Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori has formally requested legislative powers from Parliament to implement reforms across several sectors, including public security, the prison system, taxation, and labor laws. The proposal includes measures to classify criminal organizations as terrorists, reform the use of force by police and military, and address prison overcrowding by constructing new facilities and utilizing military personnel for external control.

Economic aspects of the request include incentives for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and potential changes to the holiday schedule to boost productivity. Fujimori also addressed the potential for El Niño mitigation and bureaucratic reduction.

Separately, the President categorically rejected suggestions of dissolving Congress, calling them a “slip” following comments by Ombudsman Josué Gutiérrez, who suggested a dissolution might increase her popularity. Fujimori emphasized her commitment to constitutional order and called for technical, objective debate within Parliament. She also defended her Minister of Culture, Alberto Beingolea, against recent investigations, stating he had provided satisfactory explanations.
