Keiko Fujimori seeks Senate approval for UN General Assembly trip to New York

The Peruvian Executive has requested authorization from the Senate for President Keiko Fujimori to travel to New York from September 21 to 25, 2026. The primary purpose of the trip is to participate in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

During her stay, Fujimori is scheduled to deliver a speech at the General Debate and attend high-level meetings organized by the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) and the Americas Society/Council of the Americas (AS/COA). The agenda also includes bilateral meetings with heads of state and government to discuss security and promote foreign investment. Additionally, Fujimori is expected to attend a dinner hosted by Donald Trump for heads of state.

While the President is abroad, First Vice President Luis Galarreta will be in charge of the Presidency, in accordance with the Peruvian Constitution.

Separately, the Fujimori administration has proposed new legislative powers to combat organized crime. The proposal includes creating a registry of criminal organizations classified as terrorists and granting police the ability to track mobile phone locations and geolocalization data to combat extortion, kidnapping, and contract killings.
