Keiko Fujimori wins narrow Peru presidential race; opponent alleges fraud

Keiko Fujimori was officially declared president of Peru for the 2026‑2031 term after receiving 50.135% of the vote, edging out Roberto Sánchez of the left, who obtained 49.865%. The margin was roughly 50,000 votes out of more than 18 million cast.

Sánchez publicly acknowledged the result but said it does not preclude his right to denounce alleged irregularities, particularly concerning the votes of Peruvians living abroad. He petitioned the Inter‑American Commission on Human Rights for protective measures, a request the National Elections Jury (JNE) rejected as unfounded. The three left‑wing parties announced a parliamentary alliance aimed at strict political oversight and restoring peace in the deeply divided nation.
