Keiko Fujimori clinches Peru presidential runoff with a 49,641‑vote lead

Peru's National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) completed the count of the June 7 runoff, confirming that right‑wing candidate Keiko Fujimori received 9,223,396 votes (50.135 %) and defeated left‑wing contender Roberto Sánchez, who obtained 9,173,755 votes (49.865 %). The margin of 49,641 votes makes the result one of the tightest in recent Peruvian elections.

The National Electoral Jury (JNE) is set to proclaim Fujimori officially on 3 July, will deliver presidential credentials on 15 July, and her inauguration is scheduled for 28 July. Sánchez has announced he will not recognize the outcome and plans to file a legal appeal, alleging irregularities in overseas voting, though no fraud has been proven.

Fujimori, the daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori, promised a plural, “open” cabinet and pledged to tackle crime and inequality. Her victory marks the return of the Fujimori political dynasty after more than a decade of instability, with Peru having seen ten presidents since 2016.
