Keiko Fujimori Wins Peru Presidency, Proclaimed Amid Regional Praise

Keiko Fujimori of Fuerza Popular secured the Peruvian presidency in the 2026 runoff, receiving 9,223,396 votes (50.135 %) against Roberto Sánchez’s 9,173,755 votes (49.865 %). The margin of 49,641 votes triggered a narrow victory that ends a decade‑long cycle of political instability.

The Jurado Nacional de Elecciones (JNE) confirmed that the official proclamation will take place on Friday 3 July, followed by the delivery of credentials on 15 July and inauguration on 28 July, making Fujimori the first woman elected president in Peru’s history.

Regional leaders quickly sent congratulations. Argentine President Javier Milei called the result a “signal of change” and pledged stronger cooperation against organized crime. Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele and Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa also expressed support, highlighting a new era of “firm leadership” in Latin America. Lima’s mayor Renzo Reggiardo met with Fujimori to discuss security, municipal policing and transport projects, including a proposed municipal police force and a new urban rail line.

Opposition candidate Sánchez announced plans to appeal to domestic and international courts, but the electoral authorities have affirmed the results and indicated that the proclamation is final under the legal timetable. Analysts noted a broader democratic fatigue, warning that acceptance of the outcome must be paired with sustained public engagement to address long‑standing issues such as insecurity, labor informality and institutional distrust.
