Keir Starmer says he gets on well with Trump at G7 as leaders back Iran breakthrough

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and his G7 counterparts welcomed President Donald Trump’s “breakthrough” memorandum of understanding with Iran, urging a robust, comprehensive follow‑on agreement to prevent Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon. In a joint declaration the leaders of the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Canada stressed the historic opportunity for regional security and pledged support for verification and the removal of mines in the Strait of Hormuz.

Starmer also told reporters that he and Trump “get on really well”, describing a series of informal conversations at the summit in Evian, France. He said the two leaders had spoken on the phone and sat together at meals, discussing the Iran deal and other issues without any tension. Starmer highlighted the frank and productive dialogue as part of the broader G7 focus on Ukraine, the Middle East and global threats.
