Keir Starmer says he rescued Labour and eliminated antisemitism before stepping down

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer gave his final interview before leaving Downing Street, saying he wants to be remembered as "the person who rescued the Labour Party from the brink of extinction" and who "turned it around" in a short period. He claimed his chief legacy was eradicating institutional antisemitism within Labour and restoring the party’s electability after its historic loss in 2019.

Starmer, speaking while on a trip to Kyiv, added that he never intended to become prime minister and expressed confidence that Andy Burnham would lead Labour to future electoral success. He highlighted that Labour’s vote share had fallen to 32 % and 203 seats after the 2019 defeat, but under his leadership the party returned to power with one of the largest modern majorities. The interview marked his last press briefing before the upcoming power transition in the United Kingdom.
