Keir Starmer warns future UK premier cannot cut diplomatic time

Outgoing British prime minister Keir Starmer told the BBC that his successor will not be able to devote less time to foreign affairs than he did during his two‑year tenure. He argued that international crises and diplomacy remain central to the role of prime minister and that the balance between domestic and international responsibilities is inseparable. Starmer rejected calls for a more inward‑focused agenda, noting that critics have accused him of spending too much time on global issues. He highlighted the growing instability in world affairs and warned that “the same balance between international and domestic matters applies”. Andy Burnham, seen as a leading contender to replace Starmer, has pledged to refocus the government on national priorities such as purchasing power, housing and regional devolution.
