Keith Sonderling confirmed as U.S. Labor Secretary

Keith Sonderling Department of Labor Senate confirmation Lori Chavez-DeRemer US politics

The United States Senate confirmed Keith Sonderling as the Secretary of Labor on Wednesday in a 47-41 vote. Sonderling, who has served as acting secretary since April, previously held roles at the Department of Labor and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission during the first Trump administration.

Sonderling succeeds Lori Chavez-DeRemer, who left the position for the private sector following scrutiny. An internal Department of Labor inspector general report recently detailed allegations of a 'toxic, intimidating and humiliating' work environment during Chavez-DeRemer's tenure.

Senator Bill Cassidy, who chairs the relevant committee, supported the nomination, stating confidence that Sonderling would protect workers and assist businesses with AI-driven workforce transitions. Democrats opposed the confirmation, citing concerns over department policies and grant program management.
