Misconduct investigation of Lori Chavez-DeRemer

Overview

A U.S. Department of Labor Office of Inspector General investigation has detailed extensive misconduct by former Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer. The report describes a “toxic, intimidating and humiliating” work environment where Chavez-DeRemer and senior staff, including Chief of Staff Jihun Han and Deputy Chief of Staff Rebecca Wright, allegedly consumed alcohol during official duty hours and pressured employees to participate.

Findings from the investigation, which included reviews of over 500 documents and interviews with dozens of employees, indicate that Chavez-DeRemer violated multiple department policies. These violations include the improper use of public funds for personal travel, the use of government employees for personal errands, and maintaining an “inappropriately close and unprofessional” relationship with a member of her security detail. One specific allegation involved directing a security agent to provide cash to a performer at a strip club during a trip to Oregon.

Chavez-DeRemer, a former congresswoman from Oregon, resigned from her position in April. In response to the report, Senator Bill Cassidy placed a hold on four Labor Department nominees pending a full briefing on the investigation.
