Kosovo Energy Corporation forms safety task force after worker deaths

The Kosovo Energy Corporation (KEK) is facing intense scrutiny following a series of fatal workplace accidents. At least four workers have died within recent months, with the most recent fatality occurring on August 20, 2026, when a worker died after coming into contact with 6 kV electrical cables.

KEK management has announced the formation of an Industrial Safety and Occupational Health Task Force, including external experts, to review protocols and safety standards. The Board of Directors has called for increased accountability across all levels of safety management.

Political and union leaders have criticized the situation. PDK Deputy Arian Tahiri described the deaths as evidence of institutional failure and a lack of government oversight. Union leader Xhelal Jashari highlighted extremely difficult working conditions and a lack of protective equipment. Meanwhile, Acting Minister for Labor Andin Hoti urged against the political exploitation of these tragedies, noting that investigations into mining sector accidents fall under the jurisdiction of the Mining Inspectorate rather than the Central Labor Inspectorate.
