Romania political crisis intensifies during government formation efforts

Romania faces a period of political instability as parties struggle to form a new government following the rejection of previous proposals. PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu stated that the party is close to securing a parliamentary majority, emphasizing the need for a transparent coalition and rejecting the formation of a technocratic cabinet in favor of a full-power government.

UDMR leader Kelemen Hunor has denied allegations that his party is blocking government formation or that he rejected Luca Niculescu for the premiership. Hunor clarified that while a majority can be formed with or without UDMR, the party would not support a coalition involving SOS, AUR, or other fragmented groups. He stressed that Romania requires a responsible government capable of addressing budget rectifications and state reforms.

Political analysts suggest that an alliance between PSD and UDMR could provide the necessary stability. Meanwhile, the possibility of early parliamentary elections remains a discussed scenario if the President is unable to invest a government within the constitutional timeframe, though experts note that new elections might not automatically resolve the underlying political fragmentation.
