Kelsea Tafirenyika granted bail in drug possession case

Kelsea Tadiwa Tafirenyika, the daughter-in-law of Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, and her uncle, Isaac Arab Jessub, have been granted US$1,000 bail by the High Court in Harare.

The ruling by Justice Pisirayi Kwenda overturned a previous magistrate's decision to deny bail. Under the court's strict conditions, both individuals must surrender their passports, reside at their provided addresses, and report to specific police stations every fortnight. The court also ordered that they “shall not interfere with State witnesses, exhibits or police investigations.”

Tafirenyika and Jessub face charges related to the alleged unlawful possession of pethidine for the purpose of dealing and the possession of unregistered medicines. The arrests followed an August 4 raid by the CID Drugs and Narcotics Unit at Tafirenyika’s Greystone Park residence. Authorities allege that more than 200 ampoules of pethidine and morphine were found in her bedroom, and five rolls of cannabis were discovered in her vehicle.
