Drug and money laundering case involving Mnangagwa family

Overview

Kelsea Tadiwa Tafirenyika, the daughter-in-law of Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, was arrested following a police raid on her Harare residence. During the raid, detectives from the CID Drugs and Narcotics Unit allegedly seized 154 ampoules of pethidine, 50 ampoules of morphine sulphate, and five rolls of cannabis.

Initially, a magistrate remanded Tafirenyika in custody, but the High Court in Harare later granted her and her uncle, Isaac Arab Jessub, US$1,000 bail under strict conditions. As proceedings progressed, the scope of the allegations expanded to include US$9.36 million in money laundering and drug-related charges, as well as the use of a forged identity document.

During bail hearings, Tafirenyika’s legal team challenged claims that she owns 22 properties in Harare and assets in Dubai acquired through criminal proceeds, arguing these are matrimonial assets held jointly with her husband, Collins Mnangagwa. The defense maintains that the link between the criminal allegations and the First Family has been “manufactured by others” and political opportunists.

In an effort to seek an “amicable resolution” to the family dispute and distance herself from claims that her legal defense has scandalized the presidency, Tafirenyika has issued a “profuse apology” to First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa.
