CHP member ceremony scandal over alleged paid actors
Turkey’s ruling Republican People's Party (CHP) faced accusations that its July 25‑26 2026 member‑participation and badge‑awarding ceremony in Istanbul’s Rauf Denktaş Cultural Center was filled with paid “figürans”. Reports said cast agencies brought hundreds of people to the event, paying each 950 TL and directing them to chant slogans such as “Halkın umudu Kılıçdaroğlu” while wearing CHP Youth Branch vests.
CHP Istanbul Provincial Chairman Gürsel Tekin publicly denied the allegations, filed a criminal complaint with the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office and called the reports a “provocation”. Party spokesperson Müslim Sarı echoed the denial and said legal action would be taken. The Istanbul prosecutor’s office opened an investigation into the claims.
Cast agency Merss Production (also reported as Merss Prodüksiyon) issued a statement insisting it provided voluntary technical support for the ceremony and received no money from the party. Journalist Ebru Çelik of BirGün documented the alleged payments and transport process, noting that participants were instructed to rehearse slogans and were escorted by agency staff.
