CHP figurant scandal evolves amid investigation and denials

The Republican People’s Party (CHP) faced a scandal following a membership and badge-awarding ceremony in Istanbul on 25 July 2026. On 30 July, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor opened a criminal investigation, summoning journalists Timur Soykan, Fatih Altaylı, and Uğur Dündar as suspects. Concurrently, the CHP announced new provincial chairpersons for twelve provinces, though Tekin’s status in Istanbul remained under discussion.

In a significant development on 24 August, Mers Agency owner Ömer İne admitted his previous claims that extras were provided voluntarily were false. İne stated his agency provided at least 250 extras and alleged that he was pressured to lie about the nature of the arrangement. He further claimed that the CHP has failed to pay the agencies involved, leaving him personally indebted to the workers.
