Ken Kutaragi warns of creative stagnation in video game industry

Ken Kutaragi, the creator of the PlayStation, has issued a warning regarding creative stagnation within the video game industry. Speaking at the opening of the Creative Entertainment Research and Education Center (CEREC), Kutaragi noted that while the industry has achieved massive economic success—surpassing the music and film markets with a value of approximately $186 billion—technological advancement has not been matched by fundamental innovation in gameplay content.

Kutaragi argued that although modern games feature photorealistic graphics and highly advanced technical capabilities, the core approach to developing content has remained largely unchanged since the era of the original PlayStation. He emphasized that the industry is at a turning point and must rediscover its pioneering spirit to reach the next stage of evolution.

He urged developers to maintain human curiosity and a willingness to take risks rather than settling for the status quo. Kutaragi cautioned that if developers lose this curiosity and believe they have already reached the peak of what is possible, the industry’s progress will effectively end.
