Ken Kutaragi on video game industry evolution
Overview
Ken Kutaragi, the creator of PlayStation, has shared perspectives on the current state and future direction of the video game industry.
Initially, Kutaragi warned of ‘creative stagnation,’ noting that while the industry has achieved massive economic success, technological advancements in graphics have not been matched by fundamental innovation in gameplay. He urged developers to rediscover a pioneering spirit and maintain human curiosity to avoid the end of industry progress.
Regarding industry shifts, Kutaragi expressed support for Sony’s transition away from physical media for the PlayStation 5, stating that continuing to support physical discs is ‘not reasonable from an economic standpoint.’ He suggested that high-speed internet is changing consumer behavior and that the industry must address perceptions of digital ownership. Additionally, he predicted that consoles might eventually disappear as companies pivot toward streaming solutions to manage rising component costs.
In a recent interview with VGC, Kutaragi defended Sony’s plan to phase out physical disc production by 2028, characterizing consumer backlash as a ‘mentality issue.’ While acknowledging that physical media serves as a ‘metaphor for owning’ games, he reiterated that maintaining disc production is no longer ‘economically reasonable’ due to ubiquitous high-speed internet. He compared this shift to the adoption of smartphones, where users access content digitally.
Parallel to these distribution shifts, Sony is exploring new technologies for future hardware, such as the PlayStation 6. A recent patent application for ‘Generation Super Sampling’ describes a method to reduce latency by using AI to predict player actions via controller input data, aiming to generate interpolated frames by anticipating movement before it is fully rendered.
