Ken Paxton faces legal rulings and campaign scrutiny in Texas
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is facing multiple legal and political challenges. In his campaign for a Texas Senate seat, leaked audio has surfaced in which Paxton expresses frustration over a perceived lack of control, stating that campaign issues are ‘all coming — you know — from D. C.’ The recordings also suggest he viewed certain endorsements, such as a Trump-related convention, as detrimental to his polling numbers.
On the legal front, the Texas Fifteenth Court of Appeals upheld a judgment declaring Paxton’s rules regarding prosecutor reporting mandates invalid. The court ruled that the Attorney General lacks the authority under the Texas Government Code to impose such extensive reporting requirements on local counties.
Additionally, a federal judge denied Paxton’s request to vacate a landmark settlement regarding misdemeanor bail reform in Harris County. The ruling preserves a 2019 consent decree that allows most individuals facing misdemeanor charges to be released without cash bail, a system previously found to exacerbate poverty without significantly improving public safety.
