Texas Senate race intensifies as Talarico breaks fundraising records

The Texas Senate race between Democrat James Talarico and Republican Ken Paxton has become one of the most expensive and closely contested contests of the 2026 midterms. Talarico has achieved a historic fundraising milestone, raising $64 million in the third quarter alone and totaling over $134 million since his campaign launch in September 2025. His campaign relies heavily on small-dollar donors, with 97 percent of his third-quarter contributions being under $100.

Polling indicates a highly competitive race. While some surveys, such as a Marist College poll, show Talarico leading by a small margin, others, like a Quantus Insights poll, place Paxton slightly ahead. The race is characterized by significant spending, with total costs in the Texas contest surpassing $501 million.

In addition to the Senate race, the Texas gubernatorial contest is also tightening. Governor Greg Abbott is facing a competitive challenge from Democrat Gina Hinojosa. Leaked audio from a private fundraiser revealed Ken Paxton expressing concerns that Abbott is struggling in his reelection bid and predicting that Republicans may lose seats in the Texas Legislature.
