Journalists attacked during funerals of massacre victims in Kenscoff, Haiti

Journalists covering funerals for victims of a recent gang massacre in Kenscoff, Haiti, were reportedly attacked and intimidated. The victims of the massacre included at least 47 people, following violence that occurred near the capital.

At least five photojournalists were targeted during funeral services held between August 30 and September 2. Reporters from the Associated Press (AP), Agence France-Presse (AFP), and EFE were among those affected. Witnesses reported that individuals chased, insulted, and struck the journalists, with some being pelted with stones or briefly detained.

The Union des Journalistes et Médias d’Haïti (UJMH) and the Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (SIP) have condemned the violence, describing it as a grave threat to press freedom and democratic foundations. Advocacy groups are calling on Haitian authorities to identify the perpetrators and ensure the safety of media professionals working in high-risk areas.
