Kenya accelerates digital infrastructure development through strategic partnerships

Africa is shifting its digital strategy toward building physical computing capacity, data infrastructure, and regulatory systems to support economic growth. While the continent represents 17% of the world's population, an International Telecommunication Union assessment noted it accounts for less than 1% of global data-center capacity.

In Kenya, the government is treating digital infrastructure as a critical national asset similar to roads and water. The state is implementing a ‘Digital Superhighway’ project, which includes 100,000 kilometers of fiber and 1,450 digital hubs, supported by over KSh16 billion in recent allocations. The ICT sector in Kenya is growing at approximately 10% annually.

Strategic international partnerships are also playing a key role. Kenya has established a Digital Dialogue with the European Union to cooperate on telecommunications, artificial intelligence, and data governance. This partnership includes plans to expand high-speed connectivity to thousands of public offices, schools, and health centers, alongside efforts to facilitate secure data flows through data-adequacy arrangements.
