Kenya aviation strike ends after return-to-work agreement
A two-day industrial action by the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) has caused widespread disruption at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and other Kenyan aviation hubs. The strike, which began on August 30, 2026, was driven by disputes over working conditions, compensation, and the failure to implement a previously agreed Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Workers also expressed opposition to the use of National Youth Service volunteers as airport staff.
The strike resulted in significant flight delays, cancellations, and diversions, affecting major carriers including Kenya Airways and Jambojet, as well as regional airlines like RwandAir. Hundreds of passengers were left stranded at terminals, with some spending the night at the airport. Industry bodies, including the Kenya Association of Air Operators (KAAO), warned that the disruption threatened passenger safety and Nairobi’s status as a regional aviation hub.
Following overnight negotiations with the Ministry of Transport, a return-to-work agreement was reached on Tuesday, September 1. Under the deal, KAWU and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) will immediately begin new CBA negotiations. The agreement also requires the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) to immediately remit outstanding agency fees to the union. While operations are resuming, Kenya Airways has advised passengers to expect continued delays as the airline works to clear the flight backlog, with a return to normal schedules expected by Wednesday, September 2.
