Kenya aviation workers strike

Overview

A two-day industrial action by the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) caused widespread disruption at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and other regional hubs starting August 30, 2026. The strike, led primarily by air traffic controllers, resulted in significant flight delays, cancellations, and diversions affecting carriers such as Kenya Airways, Jambojet, and RwandAir, impacting destinations including Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda, Somalia, and Mauritius.

Workers cited grievances regarding working conditions, compensation, delayed salary reviews, and the failure to implement long-standing collective bargaining agreements. There was also opposition to the use of National Youth Service volunteers as airport staff and disputes over union dues at the Kenya Airports Authority.

Following negotiations with the Ministry of Transport, a return-to-work agreement was reached. Under the deal, KAWU and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority will begin new negotiations, and the Kenya Airports Authority is required to remit outstanding agency fees to the union. While operations began normalizing by early September, officials noted that negotiations regarding outstanding issues would continue.
