Kenya boarding school fire kills 16, arson suspected

On 28 May, a fire broke out at Utumishi Girls' Boarding School in Nakuru, Kenya, killing 16 students and injuring 79. The school housed about 808 pupils at the time of the blaze.

Kenya's Interior and National Administration Minister Kipchumba Murkomen said security‑camera footage shows some pupils deliberately entering the dormitory and starting the fire. The Criminal Investigations Department, using the footage, witness statements and forensic evidence, has detained eight students while the inquiry continues. No formal charges have been filed yet.

Education Minister Julius Ogamba confirmed the casualty figures and reported that most of the injured have been discharged after treatment.
