Kenya Utumishi Girls fire – charges and education response
Overview
The dormitory fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil on 28 May 2026 killed 16 pupils and injured dozens. Prosecutors approved 16 murder counts against nine students, and the school principal was suspended for safety breaches. A virtual hearing began on 26 June in Nairobi’s High Court, with eight of the accused appearing from the Kabete Juvenile Remand Home. The court barred media coverage, moved the case to Nairobi for security, and ordered mental‑health assessments.
On 1 July, Judge Diana Kavedza of the Kibera High Court formally charged eight schoolgirls, aged 15 to 18, with murder. All pleaded not guilty, extending the legal process that began with the virtual hearing. The charges revive longstanding concerns about boarding‑school safety; education minister Julius Ogamba noted that at least 204 senior schools were temporarily closed after the fire, though most have since resumed classes.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and President William Ruto have linked the tragedy to a national push for moral education, announcing a Sh 784 billion budget, recruitment of 124,000 teachers, and construction of new classrooms and labs. The government’s task‑force investigation continues, but no direct financial aid has been offered to victims’ families.
