Kenya construction sector faces risks from substandard materials and oversight failures

Kenya’s construction industry is facing significant risks regarding structural safety and long-term maintenance costs. A government report tabled in Parliament identified systemic failures contributing to building collapses, including poor workmanship, compromised regulatory agencies, and weak enforcement by county governments. The report noted that some developers sacrifice structural quality to maximize profits, often failing to conduct necessary geotechnical investigations or using unqualified practitioners.

Additionally, Crown Paints has warned that the industry must prioritize durable materials and sustainable practices to avoid escalating maintenance costs. As the sector rebounds, with a recorded 6.8 per cent growth in 2025, experts argue that focusing on the lowest initial price rather than long-term value can lead to repeated repairs and wasted resources. This shift toward lifecycle costing is considered critical as Kenya aims to deliver 200,000 affordable housing units annually.
