Kenya construction safety and regulatory concerns

Overview

Following the collapse of a multi-storey building in Nairobi’s Eastleigh neighborhood, the Director of Public Prosecutions ordered the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to launch a probe. The investigation seeks to determine if Nairobi City County officials, private developers, or contractors were responsible for the incident, which caused injuries, property damage, and missing persons. The prosecution stated it will pursue action against any individuals found criminally culpable.

In a related development, a government report presented to Parliament identified systemic risks within the broader construction sector. The report cited poor workmanship, compromised regulatory agencies, and weak enforcement by county governments as factors contributing to building collapses. It noted that some developers prioritize profit over structural quality by using unqualified practitioners or failing to conduct geotechnical investigations. Experts have also emphasized the need for durable materials to avoid escalating maintenance costs as the country pursues affordable housing goals.
