Kenya Ebola Quarantine Center Triggers Fatal Protests Amid US Construction

The United States built an Ebola quarantine facility for American citizens at Laikipia Air Base in Nanyuki, Kenya, despite the country reporting zero confirmed Ebola cases. The project, announced under the Trump administration, proceeded without local consultation and was suspended by a Nairobi High Court, yet construction continued.

In early June, residents protested the facility, fearing health risks and perceiving it as a symbol of U.S. influence. Kenyan police responded with water cannons, tear‑gas and live ammunition, resulting in at least two protestors being shot dead and several others injured.
