Kenya expands port capacity and exceeds customs revenue targets
Kenya is expanding its maritime and logistical capabilities through infrastructure development and workforce training. The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has launched a UNCTAD-backed TrainForTrade Modern Port Management Programme in Kilifi to align staff skills with international standards. Additionally, construction of Berth 19B at the Port of Mombasa is 56 percent complete, a project expected to add 300,000 TEU in handling capacity.
In terms of fiscal performance, the Kenya Revenue Authority reported that customs revenue reached Sh90.05 billion (approximately US$694 million) in September, exceeding the target by 1.1 percent. This growth was driven by a 25.6 percent increase in import values and a 49.2 percent rise in bulk cargo, including fertilizers, steel, palm oil, and rice.
Further regional developments include the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone, which is 23 percent complete at the port component, and associated road works that have reached 58 percent completion. The special economic zone is projected to create at least 5,600 direct jobs once fully operational.
