Kenya fiscal performance and port infrastructure development

Overview

Kenya has reported significant growth in tax and customs revenue alongside ongoing maritime infrastructure developments. In September 2026, the Kenya Revenue Authority recorded Sh258.31 billion in total tax revenue, a 14.85% increase from the previous year. Customs revenue specifically reached Sh90.05 billion, exceeding the Treasury's monthly target by 1.1%. This customs growth was largely driven by increased imports of industrial and agricultural inputs, including steel, fertilizers, palm oil, and rice.

To support logistical and economic capacity, the Kenya Ports Authority is expanding maritime capabilities. This includes the construction of Berth 19B at the Port of Mombasa, which is 56% complete and expected to add 300,000 TEU in handling capacity. Additionally, the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone's port component is 23% complete. Workforce development is also being addressed through the UNCTAD-backed TrainForTrade Modern Port Management Programme in Kilifi.
