Kenya extends deadline for healthcare digital system migration
The Kenyan Ministry of Health has extended the deadline for healthcare facilities to migrate from the Social Health Authority (SHA) Provider Portal to the new Health Management Information System (HMIS) to October 30, 2026. Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale announced the extension to allow facilities to address technical challenges and meet requirements as the country moves toward a paperless digital health system.
As of October 1, 2026, all 6,427 public Level 2 to Level 4 health facilities have completed the transition. Among Level 5 public facilities, four have migrated while 23 remain in progress. The government is also assisting 518 contracted faith-based facilities, 38 of which have finished the process. National Government Level 6 facilities, including Kenyatta National Hospital and Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital, are expected to complete their migration by the end of next week.
The HMIS is intended to manage patient verification and electronic claims processing to improve efficiency and accountability. For private facilities already using their own platforms, the Digital Health Agency is overseeing a certification process to ensure standardization and interoperability under the Digital Health Act. Duale assured the public that patients will not be denied medical services during this transition period.
