Kenya healthcare digital system transition
Overview
The Kenyan Social Health Authority (SHA) initiated a new contracting cycle for healthcare providers for the 2026–2029 period. Under the HAKIKA framework and a new E-Contracting Platform, providers were required to complete contract renewals by September 30, 2026, to avoid being barred from serving SHA beneficiaries.
Following this, the Ministry of Health extended the deadline for healthcare facilities to migrate from the SHA Provider Portal to the new Health Management Information System (HMIS) to October 30, 2026. This extension was granted by Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale to address technical challenges as the country transitions toward a paperless digital health system.
While all 6,427 public Level 2 to Level 4 facilities have completed the transition, migration remains in progress for several Level 5 public facilities and various faith-based facilities. The HMIS is designed to manage patient verification and electronic claims, while the Digital Health Agency oversees certification for private facilities to ensure interoperability.
