Kenya is facing a growing food security crisis driven by drought and unpredictable weather, leading to shortages of staples such as maize, eggs, and milk. To address the milk deficit, the government has begun importing supplies from Uganda, as domestic production has dwindled due to seasonal challenges and dry spells.

In response to agricultural instability, the Kenyan government has implemented subsidies to encourage farming. This includes reducing the price of subsidized fertilizer from Sh2,500 to Sh2,000 per 50kg bag and cutting the cost of high-quality maize seeds by half, from Sh300 to Sh150 per kg. However, many farmers in the North Rift region remain hesitant to replant due to high operational costs and the risk of further crop failure.

The milk shortage has also raised concerns regarding product safety. The Kenya Dairy Board has issued warnings against traders adulterating milk with water or chemicals like hydrogen peroxide to increase volume. Violators face fines of up to Sh10,000 or imprisonment for up to 12 months.
