Overview

Kenya is facing an escalating food security crisis characterized by a sharp decline in domestic maize production, which has hit a seven-year low. The Kenya Food Security Steering Group projects a shortfall of approximately 18.9 million 90-kilogramme bags, with a projected harvest of 27.1 million bags against an annual requirement of roughly 46 million bags. To address this, the government is facilitating the private sector importation of up to 25 million bags, with regional suppliers like Zambia and Tanzania being considered. Additionally, forecasted floods between October and December threaten to disrupt food supplies and transportation.

The dairy sector continues to struggle, with milk deliveries to processors falling by approximately eight million litres between January and July 2026 compared to the previous year. The Kenya Dairy Board attributed this to dry and cold weather reducing pasture and fodder availability. This shortage has increased reliance on purchased feeds, driving up consumer prices; for instance, 500ml milk packets in Nairobi have risen to between Sh61 and Sh69.

In contrast to these domestic shortages, Kenya’s fruit export earnings grew significantly, reaching KSh5.7 billion in June 2026. This 19.8% increase was driven by a rise in value per tonne, led primarily by avocado exports.
