Kenya girls' school fire Utumishi Gilgil 16 dead

At around 03:30 local time on May 28, 2026, a fire broke out in the dormitory of Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, about 100 km north of Nairobi, Kenya.

The blaze killed at least 16 people, mainly students, and injured at least 73 others who were taken to hospitals. The Kenya Red Cross dispatched rescue teams, and police said the cause of the fire remains unknown while about 50 officers are investigating the incident.

The tragedy follows previous deadly school fires in Kenya, including a September 2024 blaze that killed 21 students near Nieeri and the 2001 Matsako fire that claimed 67 lives.
