Kenya leaders clash over extortion and DCI integrity allegations

National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has accused former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of attempting to extort Sh300 million from the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC). Ichung’wah alleged that Gachagua sought the funds from the state-owned enterprise over alleged transgressions from the previous administration, a claim which CRBC reportedly rejected.

In response to Gachagua’s recent criticisms regarding national security, corruption, and public debt, Ichung’wah dismissed the remarks as politically motivated attempts to undermine government institutions. He further alleged that Gachagua attempted to influence the coffee sector for personal gain by demanding Sh3 per kilogram of coffee sold through the exchange.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) also addressed allegations made by Gachagua concerning the conduct of criminal investigations. The DCI rejected these claims as unsubstantiated, asserting that its operations are guided by law and evidence rather than political interests. The agency maintained its commitment to professional investigations and addressed specific ongoing cases, including the murder of Reverend Julius Ndumia Ngari, noting that suspects have been arrested and linked to the crime through forensic evidence.
