Kenya political feud: Gachagua vs Ruto

Overview

In late July 2026, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua claimed he had received confidential information about President William Ruto’s upcoming State of the Nation address and warned that the DCI was being directed to find grounds to arrest Auditor General Nancy Gathungu. A week later, the DCI announced Gachagua had been in contact with suspects linked to the murder of Dr. Victoria Mutiso. Gachagua responded by accusing the DCI of shielding officers involved in assassination attempts against himself and other opposition figures. By mid-August, Gachagua escalated his rhetoric, labeling the Kikuyu Police Station an ‘active crime scene’ where officers act as ‘assassins for hire.’ On August 17, the Kenyan Judiciary issued a statement disowning a forged letter circulating on social media. The document falsely claimed Gachagua had attempted to influence a Supreme Court case regarding the eligibility of impeached officers, involving Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu and former Chief Justice David Maraga. Chief Justice Martha Koome condemned the fabrication as an attempt to ‘hijack judicial authority for political purposes.’ Following 55 days of political consultations, Gachagua, now leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), announced on August 24 a strategy for the 2027 General Election. He stated he is prepared to support an alternative opposition candidate to ensure Ruto’s defeat and plans to expand his influence through a tour of Luo Nyanza. He also alleged an IEBC contract for a results transmission system was ‘tailor-made’ for a South Korean firm. On August 27, Gachagua advised the opposition to prioritize mobilization and voter registration over early candidate selection before departing for an extended trip to the United States to meet the Kenyan diaspora. On September 1, Gachagua expanded his allegations against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), claiming the commission is manipulating the 2027 procurement process.
