Kenya political feud: Gachagua vs Ruto

Overview

In late July 2026, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua claimed he had received confidential information from within State House about President William Ruto’s upcoming State of the Nation address and warned that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) was being directed to find grounds to arrest Auditor General Nancy Gathungu over her audit findings. He portrayed the leaks as evidence of growing dissatisfaction among civil servants, police and intelligence officers with Ruto’s governance. A week later, the DCI announced that Gachagua had been in contact with two suspects linked to the murder of mental‑health doctor Victoria Mutiso, including the alleged organiser and the motorcycle rider who transported the gunmen. DCI Director Mohamed Amin stated that investigators identified several rogue police officers who allegedly helped coordinate the attack and supplied the firearm. In response, Gachagua accused two police officers of being paid to assassinate him, opposition leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former interior minister Fred Matiang’i, and alleged that DCI Director Mohamed Amin was shielding the officers. He also accused the police of ethnic bias in favour of Ruto’s tribe. By early August, Gachagua escalated his rhetoric, labeling the Kikuyu Police Station an “active crime scene” where officers act as “assassins for hire” to settle personal or business disputes. He further alleged that the DCI is covering up these activities and that firearms stolen during protests were being removed from official records for use in these murders. Additionally, Gachagua publicly criticized Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, accusing him of sabotaging efforts to crack down on illicit alcohol consumption. On August 11, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah countered Gachagua’s claims by accusing him of attempting to extort Sh300 million from the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and seeking personal gain within the coffee sector.
