Kenya Power Announces Planned Outages and Responds to Nationwide Blackout

Kenya Power announced scheduled maintenance that will cause electricity interruptions on Thursday, July 30, in parts of Nairobi, Nyeri, Kwale and Mombasa counties. Outages are set between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. (4:00 p.m. in Kwale) and will affect residential areas, schools, hospitals, businesses and several major roads and institutions in the listed counties.

The previous night, a sudden widespread blackout hit large sections of the country, including Nairobi’s central business district, the coastal region, Mt Kenya and parts of the Central Rift. Traffic lights failed, rail services were disrupted and many businesses closed early. Kenya Power confirmed the incident as the first nationwide outage of the year and dispatched technical teams to restore supply as quickly as possible.
