Kenya scheduled outages and blackout
Overview
Kenya Power’s routine-maintenance programme has continued from mid-June through August 2026, with a succession of scheduled power interruptions across dozens of counties. On 15 June the utility halted supply for six hours in parts of Kwale County, while Nairobi Water announced a water-supply shutdown from the night of 15 June to midday on 16 June to repair a pipeline leak. A further water outage was scheduled for 20 June, affecting many Nairobi suburbs, and a power blackout was planned for 21 June in Kisii and Nyeri counties. On 30 June Kenya Power listed outages for Kericho, Uasin Gishu, Kisumu, Nyeri, Embu, Meru and Kilifi, followed by a second round on 2 July covering Nandi, Kisumu, Nyeri, Tharaka Nithi, Kiambu, Kwale, Mombasa and Kilifi. The utility then announced a ten-county outage for 21 July (including Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisumu, Bungoma, Nyeri, Embu, Meru, Kiambu, Mombasa and Tana River) and, on 30 July, scheduled interruptions in Nairobi, Nyeri, Kwale and Mombasa, coinciding with a sudden nationwide blackout the previous night that disrupted traffic lights, rail services and businesses. The blackout was identified as the first of the year, prompting rapid deployment of technical teams.
In late July, additional maintenance was scheduled for Kisumu, Nyeri, Embu, Kirinyaga, Kilifi and Mombasa. On 12 August, further interruptions were planned for Nakuru, Migori, Meru, and Mombasa. Separately, following a fire at the Musaga Substation on 7 August, the utility reported that power had been restored to 90 percent of customers in Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia, Siaya, and Vihiga counties, though some areas continue to experience low voltage as crews replace damaged cables and transformers.
